Although Gregor Nusser and Susanne Baumgart have just recently opened their new gallery space in Munich’s Steinheilstrasse 18, Gregor Nusser’s family has been active in this trade for decades. Susanne Baumgart, Gregor Nusser’s wife, grew up in a family with an affinity for art, too: her father, Hans J. Baumgart, assembled / arranged the art collection of the car company Daimler-Benz throughout several years. Susanne Baumgart and her husband and business partner Gregor Nusser have both studied art history. Even the new gallery address has tradition: in this gallery space Six Friedrich, the grand dame of contemporary art, presented several important figures of the art scene in Munich for the first time and - thereby - wrote art history. Today, Gregor Nusser and his wife want to be considered not only as art dealers, but rather as committed galerists who represent established as well as emerging artists. The partners run their jointly owned gallery, until recently located in at Residenzstrasse in Munich’s city centre in a rather hidden gallery space on the third floor, already since 2003. The couple know many artists they manage already for years. Among these is Pietro Sanguineti who currently has a solo show (until August 28) at the gallery. “We represent Sanguineti since 10 years and we have been able to place his works in numerous private and public collections“, says Nusser about Sanguineti’s sculptural light objects that bring to mind the aesthetics of logos and advertising. “We have been reasonable in raisung his prices“, Nusser adds. The last artist to join the gallery – the Berlin based photo artist Michael Wesely, famous for his remarkable long time exposures – is known and held in high regard by Nusser and Baumgart for many years. Altogether the current artist list compromises 18 names. „Surely a challenge considering our current capacity in terms of personnel“, Nusser remarks. Among the artists are many positions who have their roots as well as their domain in the local Academy of Fine Arts and who see Nusser & Baumgart as the adequate platform for showcasing their work. The commitment to the location is taken seriously and sounds convincing. The gallery’s programme is domintated by young positions that were left untouched by the last big boom of the art market - however, that is the reason for Nusser & Baumgart of being untroubled by the prevailing crisis so far. “We have only felt the effects of the current crisis at art fairs“, Nusser comments. As an example, Michael Wesely’s work exemplifies the basic , programatic approach of the gallery, namely representing artistic positions that deal with relevant questions and perspectives. Even it may sound pretentiuous, the gallery does focus on this premise. Wesely for instance deals with photography’s inherent relevance ot time, namely the fast-paced present. The artist visualises the effects of time by means of his extraordinary long time exposures and thereby questions the vertigo of current society. The artist Pietro Sanguineti analyses the effect of logos and advertising slogans with a view to the perception in modern society, Tom Früchtl paints the object’s appearance on the object itself and questions the mimentic use of depiction and painting, Daniel Man, who will exhibit in the new gallery space from September, scrutinizes his Chinese roots regarding his upbringing and his existence in the western world. Susanne Baumgart and Gregor Nusser are confident about their immenent future. They focus on the development of their network comprehending private and institutional collectors; besides they pursue placing of artists in important solo and group shows of renowned museums and institutions. Furthermore already existing cooperations with other galleries will be extended, for example with Dogenhaus Galerie in Leipzig, Voges + Partner Galeriein Frankfurt as well as PIEROGI Brooklyn and Spencer Brownstone Gallery in New York. represented artists |
