Manfred Kielnhofer - Timeguards / Spiritguards
Skulptur - Malerei – Fotografie

These Timeguards are the first in a series of works based upon the theme of the 'time guardian.' Kielnhofer has gone on to produce these pieces in bright and cheerful colours contradictory to their sombre forms, an unexpected juxtaposition. The series on display at the Cass Sculpture Foundation is part of his original treatment of this imagery, in forms and colours meant to evoke a mystical feeling.
These forms are meant to resemble ancient creatures from another realm, who, in ancient civilisations could have been credited with disappearances, damnations and behavioral changes. Their eerie presence certainly recalls the undesirable influence these forms might have represented.
The shrouded forms pay hommage to the works of Auguste Rodin, through their concern with character and emotion. The eerie nature of these FIGURES derives from their vacant forms, they are at once deeply emotive and disconcerting.

Manfred Kielnhofer was born in Haslach an der Mühl, Austria. He currently lives and works in Linz, Austria where he opened the gallery 'Art Park' in 2005. Kielnhofer is self-taught and his work spans the mediums of painting, film, photography, installation, performance and sculpture.

Kielnhofer's work is predominantly concerned with the human figure, and its various forms and movements. The figure is an integral part of his work, and he often uses the human form as a tool, either in place of a canvas, or in a collaboration to produce large-scale installations or performances.

Kielnhofer has exhibited widely throughout Austria and his work has recently been featured in exhibitions in New York and Miami. Kielnhofer's Timeguards represent the first of his works to be exhibited in the UK.

Art in Public: 500 Masterpieces from the Ancient World to the Present – Timeguards Kielnhofer – Light Cactuses Luckeneder
Works of art make a substantial contribution to cultural identification. When they are placed in a public place, this function is enhanced. However the artwork also acknowledges other tasks: it figuratively announces content in the traditional role, standing as the image of a ruler or at least serves as decoration, while in the Modern period they become increasingly space defining or shaping. In this volume 500 projects are presented. Around 150 works document the history of this species of art. The development of contemporary art in public places during the last decades dominates Art in Public with about 350 examples. Succinct texts locating the work, the artist and the style, concentrate on what is special about the works and explain the effect they have every day on passers-by according to Paul Watzlawick’s axiom that “One can not not communicate“. From the contents: - Sphinx in Gizeh, Egypt, 2.700–2.600 bc. - Trajan-column in Rome, Italy, 113 - Roland-Statue in Bremen, Germany 1404 - Albert Memorial in London, England, 1875 (George-Gilbert Scott) - Citizens of Calais, France, 1889 (Auguste Rodin) - The Endless Column in Târgu Jiu, Rumania, 1938 (Constantin Brâncusi) - Broken Obelisk in Houston, USA, 1963 (Barnett Newman) - Saurien in New York, USA 1975 (Alexander Calder) - Sculpture Liverpool Street in London, England, 1987 (Richard Serra) - Pre-Bell-Man in Frankfurt/Main, Germany 1990 (Nam June Paik) - Human Structures, San Francisco, USA, 2008 (Jonathan Borofsky) - Timeguards, Linz, Austria, 2010 (Manfred Kielnhofer) - Light Cactuses, Gramastetten, Austria, 2010 (Christoph Luckeneder) http://www.van-uffelen.de/Editorial_office/-_Art_in_Public.html

Figurative sculpture installations take on new meaning within the context of location. Art of the highest human form. Manfred Kielnhofer’s sculptures accomplish this task. The transitory nature of the work remind me of Antony Gormley’s public sculptures, especially his “Another Place” series of a 200 craggy, metal figures on the ocean beach.
But, the Austrian artist’s work conjure up a more ethereal, mystical quality. They’re shrouded in mystery calling out their ancestors and their progeny. When the viewer looks from particular angles, they become diaphanous, almost soulless — like the ring-wraiths, the Nazgul, from The Lord of the Rings or even a rougher-hewn predecessor in Prague.
Even the introductory paragraph of the Austrian artist’s site reads like the opening to an ancient future, calling on the Druids of Stonehenge and the crusaders of Everquest or the worlds of Myst:
In the ages of the ancient advanced civilizations the presence of the Guardians of Time was recognized with respect, reverence and humility. Over the millennia a new mystery was formed and only a few chosen ones, like high priests, spiritual masters and shamans were granted to study it. They were the ones that got a deeper insight in the secret of THE TIME GUARDIANS. The beings were referred to as visitors from other systems, protectors or destroyers and even gods.
