Less is more : Mayumi Yamakawa’s pictures reflect her geographical movement between far east Asia and middle Europe. Japanese nuance in her pictures have different color construction and it’s esthetical sense from European ones. In a Japanese way it’s style focuses on reduction, - reduction of colors, forms. And color gradation. Looking a simple monochrome like in a glance, the background, however, is neither flat nor empty but variety and depth of color can be recognized. Man cannot compared with European style. In her painting Mayumi Yamakawa combines two entire different techniques – traditional European egg tempera and Japanese Sumi-e (black ink painting). These two century-old techniques create a deep color gradation and peculiar brush strokes, which are most suitable for her prevailing theme – the play of light in the air and the reflections on and over landscapes.

(English translation)

"All exhibited art works mirror her Japanese origin - sometimes more and sometimes less obviously: This applies to her sunrise and sunset paintings which, despite of their large format and vivid egg tempeara colors, appear peculiarly delicate. And it also applies to the exhibited traditional Japanese ink drawings (Sumi-e)."

(Deutsch)

"Ihre japanische Herkunft spricht aus jedem ihrer ausgestellten Kunstwerke, mal mehr, mal weniger offensichtlich: aus ihren Sonnenauf- und untergängen, die trotz des großen Formats und der kräftigen Eitempera-Farben seltsam zart wirken, fast wie ihre ebenfalls ausgestellten, traditionellen Tuschezeichnungen (Sumi-e)".
