Maja Bajevic - Profile

Maja Bajevic, born 1967 in Sarajevo, reflects in her work always the social and political conditions of her home country Yugoslavia after Civil War. She is interested in the conflicts that arise between the private and the public, the intimate and the political. She transformes her subjective perspective into a public context. Bajevic uses video and photography, but also performes for the implementation of her work. She participated in the documenta12. Bajevic became known for her work entitled "Women at Work". With five women, she embroidered the constuction cover of the National Gallery of Bosnia-Herzegovina, witch was renewed, with folk motifs. The work lest the domestic activities become public. In "Double Bubble" (2001) she points out the schizophrenic and paradoxical situation after the war. A dark-dressed woman speaks in a video phrases like: "I have shot 55 people during prayer in the name of God." This refers to the unexplained identity construction, which is the result of a war that was fought because of religious segregation. Only in recent time, her focus shifts away from a political reference to a wider cultural realm, such as proven in her Internet project "I wish I was born in Hollywood" (2006). Maja Bajevic lives and works in Paris and Sarajevo. © ArtLogistics
