Maria Lassnig - Profile

Maria Lassnig, the grande dame of Austrian art, is one of the most significant and innovative painters of contemporary art. After studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, she spent several stays in Paris and New York, where they are from 1970 to 1972 at the School of Visual Arts Animationsfilm studied. As 1980 she returned to Vienna, she became the first woman in the German-speaking professor of painting at the Vienna Academy of Applied Arts, in the same year, she attended the Venice Biennale in part. 1982 and 1997 she was at the Documenta in Kassel shown. Maria Lassnig's art includes not only paintings but also sculptures, cartoons, and a great graphic work: her drawings she held long under lock and published it until 1997 in "The spring is the sister of the brush ', edited by Hans Ulrich Obrist. For her life's work was received several awards, including the Great Austrian State Prize 1988, the Roswitha Haftmann Prize of the City of Zurich and the Rubens Prize of the City of Siegen, 2002, the Max Beckmann Prize of the City of Frankfurt 2004 and 2005 the Austrian Medal for Science and the Arts.
