Mariko Mori - Profile

Sophisticatedly and innovatively welding together the contradictions of contemporary Japanese culture, MoriÂ's work blends Buddhist meditation with slick cyber fantasy, modernising ancient rituals with 21st century technology. The South Bank, between the Battersea and Albert Bridges, will be host and home for two months to MoriÂ's iconic specially programmed and designed 18ft glass sculpture, interwoven with intelligent LED lighting, designed by Isometrix. This monumental sculpture will be co-ordinated to change colour in accordance with the movement of the celestial bodies overhead. It is a unique piece with only one other smaller version having been shown this year. Equally monumental will be the display inside the gallery of three 6ft circular photomontages and four video installations by the artist. The photomontages titled Beginning of the End: Present, Past and Future, are composed of three elements typical in MoriÂ's work presenting meditations on the attainment of inner peace through a relationship with the environment. Mori presents herself to us within a clear glass isolation pod, suspended in liquid, in some of the most famous locations in the world, provoking a dialogue between the influx of cross-pollinating cultures and the attainment of an inner constant calm.
