Stephan Balkenhol - Profile |
Balkenhol's material is wood, from which he creates sculptures and reliefs. There are drawings and prints. Stephan Balkenhol is one of the most renowned representatives of figurative sculpture and is known worldwide for its roughly carved and colored sculptures taken from humans and animals, individually, in groups or in combination surreal. With its austere, silent figures Balkenhol is by no means a retrospective stance: Rather it is a driving game with refined traditions and viewing habits. For his seemingly inconspicuous figures he chooses preferred unusual locations in public spaces, such as a ledge on a wall of fire in Munster (1987), a pier overlooking the Thames (1992) or an unstable buoys in the water. Peculiarly for his work is that his characters usually on a pedestal of the same material are available from this in one piece hewn out and seem to grow. Wood processing and traces remain in Balkenhol pieces always clear about the nature of the clothing of his people and their representations habitus is always clearly related to the time now to read, even if they are in their contemplative Gesammelte always about temporal reference. The German sculptor Stephan Balkenhol, born 1957 in Fritzlar, lives and works in Karlsruhe and Meisenthal in France. © ArtLogistics |
