| Vito Acconci was born in 1940 in New York's Bronx, began his artistic career as a writer. His first films, videos and performances in the context of art created around 1970 and concentrate on addressing the act of artistic production as well as on self-analysis. The focus was the artist himself, as his body image, media and target in relation to the viewer. With "Fall" 1969, for example, documented Acconci in his own traps fall forward onto the ground, in the framework of "Seedbed" onanierte it publicly in 1972 the Sonnabend Gallery in New York and said this about his sexual inspiration from the present audience. From the mid-seventies Acconci analyzes shifting towards the audience and its spatial environment. There are usable sculptures, installations and architectural structures for exhibitions and public spaces, under the general title of "Public Space for a Private Time" reinforces the contrast between the public and private space.
